Program
Featured presentations included:
- Creating Healthy Schools: SBHC and SHS Collaboration - Panel and discussion to learn more about School Based Health Centers (SBHCs) and potential partnerships to strengthen the SHS program. Facilitated programing to assist participants in creating communication strategies regarding the Medicaid SHS Program, SBHCs and the importance of student health and academic achievement. Build support and provide a deeper understanding of the health efforts among district staff members.
- Mobile Clinics - Bringing Services to Kids - Attendees will learn about the Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics (RMYC) model for integrative health care, including holistic primary care (medical, dental, behavioral health and wraparound services) and coordinating services with community partners.Additionally, RMYC has three Care Mobiles that travel to schools and community sites to offer medical and dental health care services to children. These pediatric clinics on wheels serve patients who may experience barriers to health care – including lack of insurance – and would not typically receive preventive and/or primary care services. Mobile care services at schools is an excellent way to address unmet health needs, and therefore may be an option to strategically spend medicaid reimbursement funds.
- Improving Dental Health - Smart Mouths Smart Kids (SMSK) has developed a toolkit to encourage communities to establish sustainable preventive oral health programs in their schools, and to develop relationships with dental providers that will assure dental homes for children. The easy-to-use Smart Mouths Smart Kids (SMSK) toolkit encourages Colorado communities to achieve health equity for disparate populations across the state. Data cited in both Chew on This, the oral health burden document released by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Colorado Oral Health Plan released by OHCO, indicate that there are serious oral health inequities experienced by Colorado’s low-income, rural and minority children. It makes sense to try to eliminate health barriers and inequities by providing services in an environment where children are comfortable and accessible to providers – the public schools. The SMSK presentation will demonstrate the Toolkit and discuss how it can assist in integrating oral health into school health programs. There will be ample time for questions and discussion around using the toolkit and its many components.
- Student Health Advisory Council - Give Students a Voice in Health - The Jeffco Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group of high school students from across Jeffco Public School District with the mission of: Pioneering the way toward balanced, healthy lifestyles and a quality learning environment by giving students a voice in health and bringing district-wide awareness and education around physical and mental well-being. SHAC has been in place for five school years and has developed support materials and programs for dozens of schools in Jeffco ranging from marijuana prevention to bully prevention to getting youth outdoors. SHAC is part of the Jeffco Healthy Schools initiative and Kaiser Permanente’s Arts Integrated Resources.
- Behavioral and Mental Health - Supporting Students - An Introduction to Mindfulness for Educators - Participants will gain an experiential and cognitive understanding of mindfulness for educational professionals: its role in self care and stress reduction, its connection to developing social and emotional capacity and its connection to mental and behavior health service delivery. Consortium staff will provide perspectives on the connection between mindfulness training and Medicaid funding streams, including utilizing reimbursement funds for professional development and training.
